PLO 1 Demonstrate knowledge and skills related to
learning using technology and
PLO 2 Demonstrate knowledge and skills in current and
emerging instructional technologies.
The original assignment requested discussion of upcoming technologies, and their roles in teaching and learning. You were asked to take over an Advanced Placement (AP) course in world history for students in the tenth grade. You were given several assignment prompts from the previous year utilizing at least three separate technologies and you had to decide how these technologies could be improved. The assignment asked that you keep in mind the various learning preferences and types of intelligence as you select your technologies to incorporate into your final written work.
NOTE: This is The Revised Version of My Paper, the
original paper has no pictures or visual aids, in this revision I have
incorporated the application of various technologies that teaching and learning
process with visual aids to assist the learner in a more thorough understanding
of what technologies look like on the Wide World Web as well as using other
programs like Microsoft Word and/or PowerPoint, search engines, and other Web
2.0 tools and how they can be utilized as an effective teaching and learning
tool.
Goals of Instruction
Cognitivism/Pragmatism
Communicate or transfer knowledge in the most efficient,
effective manner (mind-independent, can be mapped onto learners)
Focus
of instruction is to create learning or change by encouraging the learner to
use appropriate learning strategies
Learning
results when information is stored in memory in an organized, meaningful
way.
Teachers/designers
are responsible for assisting learners in organizing information in an optimal
way so that it can be readily assimilated
Merrill's Component Display Model
CDT specifies how to design instruction for any cognitive domain.
CDT provides the basis for the lesson design in the TICCIT computer based
learning system. It also was the basis
for the Instructional Quality Profile, a quality control tool for instructional
materials For example, if we were designing a complete lesson on equilateral
triangles according to CDT, it would have the following minimum components:
Objective - Define an equilateral triangle (Remember-Use)
Generality - Definition (attributes, relationships)
Instance - Examples (attributes present, representations)
Generality Practice - State definition
Instance Practice - Classify (attributes present)
Feedback - Correct generalities/instances
Elaborations - Helps, prerequisites, context
Generality - Definition (attributes, relationships)
Instance - Examples (attributes present, representations)
Generality Practice - State definition
Instance Practice - Classify (attributes present)
Feedback - Correct generalities/instances
Elaborations - Helps, prerequisites, context
If the generality was presented by an explanation or illustration,
followed by practice examples, this would be an expository strategy. On the
other hand, if the students were required to discover the generality on the
basis of practice examples, this would be an inquisitory strategy
IMPLICATIONS FOR INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN
Task analysis
With the shift to Cognitivism, analysis of relevant concepts goes
beyond behavioral observations of job performance. "Content analysis has
outgrown the mere listing of statements the learner will be able to recite.
During task
analysis, goal statements are transformed into a
format that can be used to guide the rest of the instructional design process.
Upon completion of a task analysis, the designer has a list of goals describing
what learners should know or be able to do upon completion of instruction, as
well as the prerequisite skills and knowledge needed to achieve those goals.
Thus I present my Revised Work.

trade. Under what circumstances did the
slave trade begin? How did the Islamic
Slave Trade change the existing system?
How did it change again during the Atlantic Slave Trade? Finally, what impact did slave trade have on
Africa and the Western world? For this
assignment, the class computer lab will also be available for your use. Please make use of the seven internet search
engine options that I gave you in Prompt One of your three prompt assignment
instructions.
The
Slave Trade
I would like for you to make this assignment
trace the slave trade from beginning to when the end of the slave trade
occurred with President Lincoln. Please
make use of the Brainstorming websites to create your mind maps detailing the
major years and occurrences that dictated the beginning and the ending of the
slave trade (Lever-Duffy & McDonald, 2011).
Special needs stations are available in the class computer lab, Board
maker peripherals, and large letter keyboards and other audiovisual equipment
and assistive devices are available for your needs (Lever-Duffy & McDonald,

PART TWO: EVALUATION
Technology #1: Computers
(a) Research Findings
Summarize
the research findings pertaining to the selected technology, as it relates to
teaching and learning.
According to Lever-Duffy & McDonald
(2011), computers are an integral asset to the teaching and learning with
technology process. Computers will provide
educational opportunity for all types of learners and their individual learning
styles. "Some individuals learn
best by listening; thus, they may be said to have a predominantly auditory
learning style. Others may learn best by
seeing, thus having a visual learning style.
Yet others learn best by doing, which suggests a kinesthetic learning
style (Lever-Duffy & McDonald, 2011)."
Whether a learner's style is auditory, visual, or kinesthetic, there are
computer programs that can address their preferred learning style. Also available for students are assistive
devices for the special needs and gifted students. There are endless ways a teacher can make use
of computer technology to teach students all she has to do is get trained to
operate computers and the new technology available and apply it to her class
pedagogy. Computers will provide a
communications tool to both teachers and students that will allow them to
openly communicate with other people from all over the world (Lever-Duffy &
McDonald, 2011).
(b) Intelligences Addressed
Identify which type(s) of intelligence you expect to address in this
assignment and how this technology that you selected, supports this
intelligence.
Computers make it possible to assess and
support each kind of intelligences that Howard Gardner theorized. Whether your dormant intelligence is one of
the nine, or a mixture of some or all of
the intelligences which consist of Linguistic intelligence (verbal skills and
talents related to sound, meanings, and rhythms), Logical-mathematical intelligence (conceptual
and logical thinking skills), and Musical intelligence (talents and abilities
related to sound, rhythm, and pitch) (Lever-Duffy & McDonald, 2011). Spatial intelligence (skill in thinking in
pictures and visioning abstractly).
Also included in the nine intelligences are
Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence (skill in controlling body movements),
Interpersonal intelligence (responsiveness to others), and Intrapersonal
intelligence (high degree of self-awareness and insight) (Lever-Duffy &
McDonald, 2011). Finally rounding out the nine intelligences we have Naturalist
intelligence (skills in recognizing, categorizing, and interacting with the
natural world), and Existential intelligence (ability to consider and deal with
questions of human existence). As
teachers assess and get to know the students they will discover which learning
style and dormant intelligence that each student possess (Lever-Duffy & McDonald,
2011).
(c) Technology Selected
Explain why you selected the technology for this particular assignment.
I selected Computers because you have to
have computers as the gateway to the internet and the wealth of information and
websites that are available on the World Wide Web. In order to use much of the technology that
includes software and hardware you have to have a computer to run the programs
to gain access to all of the other new technologies that become available to
the teaching and learning spectrum.
(d) Appropriate Use of this Technology
Describe what you hope to accomplish through this technology, in terms
of teaching and/or learning.
I hope to provide every student with the
opportunity to learn and become skilled in and make use of the computer and all
it has to offer. From information to
games, digital/virtual worlds, and the astronomical amount of information and
other assistance available whether personal or public in domain. The computer is the technology of choice in
this era and in the coming future of technology enhanced teaching and learning.
Games & Virtual Worlds
(e) Challenges
Describe what challenges you expect to encounter when using this
technology.
The challenges that I expect to encounter
when using computer technology would be having to be trained on all of the new
programs, and then having to take my knowledge and teach it to students. With all of the different learning styles and
types of intelligences, it will be a challenge to teach the students because
they are all different and learn differently.
Another challenge might be school systems having the available funding
to secure computer labs for their school districts. This would be a challenge and would not
provide students the opportunity to stay abreast of all of the new and
accessible technology available to aid in learning.
Technology #2: Microsoft Word - Word Processor
(a)
Research Findings
Summarize the research findings pertaining to the selected technology, as it relates to teaching and learning.
Summarize the research findings pertaining to the selected technology, as it relates to teaching and learning.
In order for students and teachers to be able to communicate their
ideas onto paper using a computer they will have to have word processing
software installed to be able to type and save their ideas in to share with
others or just keep a record for themselves.
Word processing relates to teaching and learning because it provide a
medium that can be used to communicate ideas, write letter, envelopes, emails,
design projects and the possibilities become endless. Word processor have to operate on a computer
and this fact is what ties the two together to perform actions related to both
teaching and learning with technology (Lever-Duffy & McDonald, 2011).
(b)
Intelligences Addressed
Identify which type(s) of intelligence you expect to address in this assignment and how this technology that you selected, supports this intelligence.
Identify which type(s) of intelligence you expect to address in this assignment and how this technology that you selected, supports this intelligence.
I expect to address all nine of the types of intelligences, because
word processing programs are available for everyone to utilize regardless of
intelligences or learning styles. If you
can learn to operate a computer and be trained to use the word processing
software programs then this type of technology will support regular, gifted,
and special needs student to be successful in using technology to enhance their
own learning process.
(c)
Technology Selected
Explain why you selected the technology for this particular assignment.
Explain why you selected the technology for this particular assignment.
I selected word processing technology because it will provide students
and teachers with the opportunity to better communicate with themselves and
others. This software can be used for
homework, or any other written document.
This program comes with built in spell checking, the ability to save
documents, to send documents by e-mail, and to insert clipart and pictures into
your documents with ease. Word
processing lays the foundation for excellent communication venues while making
use of the computer technology.
(d)
Appropriate Use of this Technology
Describe what you hope to accomplish through this technology, in terms of teaching and/or learning.
Describe what you hope to accomplish through this technology, in terms of teaching and/or learning.
I hope that this technology will enable students with different
intelligences and learning styles to be able to use other tools in addition to
regular human speech or sign language to communicate their thoughts and
ideas. This program will also enable
teachers and students to progress in the learning processes of using computers
and software.
(e)
Challenges
Describe what challenges you expect to encounter when using this technology.
Describe what challenges you expect to encounter when using this technology.
The challenge that I foresee with this program is not fully
understanding the use of word processing and not being able to fully utilize
all of the document possibilities and communication outlets that become
possible when being able to use word processing. However, these are challenges that can be
easily overcome through proper training.
Technology #3: Internet Search Engines/ World Wide Web
(a) Research Findings

Describe what you hope to accomplish through this technology, in terms of teaching and/or learning.
I hope to accomplish the task of learning myself and teaching my future
students on the many possibilities in life personal and business that the World
Wide Web can provide. It is an ongoing
process and we will have to get constant training to stay abreast of the new
teaching and learning possibilities becoming available.
(e)
Challenges
Describe what challenges you expect to encounter when using this technology.
Describe what challenges you expect to encounter when using this technology.
The challenge that I see when using this technology is knowing how to
use it properly and knowing how to avoid pitfalls and stay safe why using the
world wide web. Scams, fraud, and
misinformation are abundant on the world wide web and the challenge is trying
to stay safe and use it in an intelligent and useful manner.
According to Digital Unite, (n.d.) “Here are some tips for staying safe
while using the World Wide Web.
How to stay safe online
The World Wide Web is a fantastic resource, but as with
everything, it has its risks. This guide will give you some hints and tips on
staying safe while enjoying this new online world.
Follow these step-by-step instructions to help you stay safe
online
Note: This guide assumes that you are using a PC with Windows.
General safety advice
Step 1: Make sure your antivirus software is up to date.
If you’re not sure whether you have antivirus, read our guides What is
antivirus? and Antivirus: how to get virus protection.
Step 2: Check that the Windows firewall is switched
on. If you have Windows 7, the appearance of a small white flag (see right)
in the system tray in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen should alert
you to any problems. Click this flag to open the Action Center to check whether
everything is working properly.
Step 3: If you have
an earlier version of Windows, a red shield-like icon in the system tray will
appear if the Windows firewall isn't switched on. Click it to see options for
rectifying the problem.
Using the internet on shared computers
If you use the internet on a shared computer – for instance, in a
library or internet cafĂ© – try to remember to use the InPrivate Browsing option
in Internet Explorer. When you do, you don’t leave any trace of the websites
you've visited.
Step 1: To use this option, click Safety in the
menu bar and choose InPrivate Browsing from the menu.
Step 2: The address
bar will now look like this. This tells you that you can browse the internet in
the normal way but without revealing your online ‘journey’ to anyone else.
Step 3: To switch
off InPrivate Browsing, just close the browser window.
Step 4: If you forget to use InPrivate Browsing, you can still
get rid of the details of what you looked at. For more information, see our
guide How to delete internet history.
Other good things to do
·
If you
use wireless broadband, make sure it’s password-protected to prevent other
people from using it.
·
Keep
your passwords secret and don’t use the same one for everything. Read our guide
How to choose a password.
·
Email
attachments can contain viruses so never open them unless you’re confident that
they’re from a reliable source. If an email looks suspicious, it’s best to
delete it.
·
Beware
of ‘phishing‘emails. These often look like they've come from a bank or similar
institution and usually ask you to click a link to verify your identity. These
emails are never genuine and should always be deleted.
·
When
shopping online, only use reputable sites. The Shopsafe website
has a directory of secure UK shops as well as advice on safe online shopping.
·
Before
entering any personal or payment information online, always check that you’re
on a secure website. This is indicated by a yellow padlock icon at the top of
the screen and a website address that starts with ‘https://’ (the ‘s’ stands
for ‘secure’).
·
Use a
nickname rather than your real name when participating in online chat rooms or
forums and don't give out any personal information.
·
If you
use social networking sites – for instance, Facebook – change your account
security settings to limit who can see your profile information. Never update
your status with information that you wouldn't want to be made public.
